Hey guys, I know I haven’t been on the blog or my social media accounts for a few weeks now. The last time I posted was my goals for April where I told you my plans for the month, then I went quiet.
Unfortunately, there was a death in my family right at the start of April. We knew it was coming as this person was suffering from Alzheimer’s, but it still hit everyone hard, and I just didn’t have the willpower to go back to the blog until now.
Mid-month check in
At the beginning of April, I said that I wanted to finish reading The Turn of The Screw by Henry James.
This is one thing I did manage to complete, but I’m still feeling a bit let down by the ending. I think it was finished in a way that lets the readers guess what really happened, but I still feel it ended rather abruptly, with little reason. Maybe it’s because of the style of writing that I feel this way. As it was written back in 1898, the sentence structure (and length!) made this a difficult book to get through for me. Nothing wrong with the story, just the way it was written. For example:
I can’t express what followed it save by saying that the silence itself – which was indeed in a manner an attestation of my strength – became the element into which I saw the figure disappear; in which I definitely saw it turn as I might have seen the low wretch to which it had once belonged turn on receipt of an order, and pass, with my eyes on the villainous back that no hunch could have more disfigured, straight down the staircase and into the darkness in which the next bend was lost.
That’s just one sentence! It’s not a difficult one to understand, but when the book is filled with sentences that span for so long it becomes difficult to remain focused, at least for me anyway.
We’re waiting a while to send out our wedding invitations, but I have printed out the guest information sheets and purchased a new fountain pen so J can write the names and addresses (his handwriting is far more elegant than mine.)
I haven’t visited the gym in the last two weeks, again I just didn’t have the willpower. I do plan on going back this week though.
So yeah, not much happened in the last few weeks really, but I wanted to give you guys an update and let you know why I wasn’t around.
Hope you understand.
